SOFTWARE AS A FACT

A complete tool.
Clear terms.

Handheld Commander · Updated October 18, 2026

SaaF — Software as a Fact — asks software to deliver a complete workflow, keep local work local and charge honestly. These principles guide the paid Handheld Commander product. Its separate demo follows a deliberate shareware tradition, explained below.

The file manager runs on your PC.

Browse two folders, copy and move files, rename batches, search, preview and work with ZIP archives. The full version and demo provide the same tools. The demo has no expiry, session timer or paid feature locks.

Local file management does not require a Handheld Commander account or a hosted service. Your files stay ordinary files on your drives. Opening a network share or launching a game uses the destination or application you choose.

One purchase. No recurring app fee.

The full version is US$4.99 on the Microsoft Store, paid once. Local prices and availability vary. There is no Handheld Commander subscription or in-app purchase for its local file-management features.

Microsoft handles Store purchases, downloads and updates. A game launcher, network destination or imported plugin can have its own requirements; those are separate from Handheld Commander.

No ads or app telemetry.

The app has no advertising, behavioral analytics or account system. Its preferences and operation records stay on your PC. Imported plugins and other applications have their own behavior and privacy terms.

The website has no analytics or advertising scripts. If you choose to email us, we receive your address and the message you send. Read the privacy policy for the app, website, Store reports and email handling.

Shareware, by choice.

The paid app is the full product. The separate demo offers the same tools without expiry, session limits or feature locks. You are welcome to keep using the Handheld Commander demo indefinitely, even if you never buy the full version. That is an accepted outcome.

At each launch, the demo shows “This is not free software” and asks for a randomly chosen A, B, X or Y input. After that, the file manager is unrestricted. The paid version omits this screen.

The startup prompt is a personal homage to Christian Ghisler’s Total Commander and the shareware tradition. Handheld Commander’s developer used Total Commander for years before recently buying a license, and wanted to offer that same room to decide.

The launch reminder is a deliberate exception to SaaF’s rejection of paid removal of artificial friction, specific to the demo. The paid product has no such notice. Permission to use this demo indefinitely is our policy for Handheld Commander.

Compatibility has real boundaries.

Handheld Commander supports 64-bit Windows 10 and 11. Gamepad navigation uses XInput, and text entry uses the Windows on-screen keyboard. Safety confirmations, operating-system behavior and hardware still set practical limits.

Some Total Commander plugins have been tested, but compatibility cannot be promised across community projects. WLX and WCX support is experimental; WDX and WFX are not implemented. Versions, dependencies and 32-bit or 64-bit requirements matter. Import only plugins you trust.

Tell us what would make it better.

A missing step, an awkward control or a feature that would help your workflow belongs in the suggestions box. The email draft includes Handheld Commander in its subject so we know which app you mean.
